DVA and Cervical Spondylosis: Claims and Compensation

Published

Article at a glance

  • Wear and tear of the neck: degeneration of the cervical spine that builds over years.
  • Service-linked: helmet and head-mounted load, pack carriage and vibration are recognised contributors.
  • Its own Statement of Principles: DVA assesses it against set factors and your evidence.
  • Imaging is key: scans confirming the degeneration carry a claim a long way.

Cervical spondylosis, wear and tear of the neck, is a common claim among veterans. Years of carrying weight on the head and shoulders, from helmets and night-vision gear to heavy packs, place sustained load on the cervical spine.

This guide explains what cervical spondylosis is, why it affects veterans, and how DVA approaches a claim. For the wider picture, see our DVA medical conditions hub and our explainer on the DVA impairment points table.

What is cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is age-related, wear-and-tear degeneration of the neck (cervical) spine. The discs lose height, the joints wear, and osteophytes can form. It commonly causes neck pain and stiffness, headaches that start at the base of the skull, and where the changes press on a nerve, pain, numbness or weakness that travels into the shoulder, arm or hand. Like other spondylosis, it develops gradually, so many veterans do not link it to service until years later.

Why it affects veterans

The neck carries a lot during service, often literally. Recognised contributors include:

  • Helmets and head-mounted equipment such as night-vision goggles and counterweights
  • Heavy packs and webbing that load the neck and shoulders
  • Whole-body vibration from vehicles and aircraft
  • Repetitive looking up, down or through optics and sights
  • Whiplash or neck injuries from falls, jumps, ejections or training

As with the lower back, it is usually the cumulative load that matters rather than one single incident. If you are also dealing with lower back problems, our guide to lumbar spondylosis claims covers the companion condition.

Can you claim cervical spondylosis through DVA?

Yes. Cervical spondylosis is a recognised condition with its own Statement of Principles. DVA assesses liability by looking at whether your service involved the recognised contributing factors and whether the medical evidence supports the diagnosis. A claim can be accepted where service caused the condition, or where service materially aggravated an existing one. Which legislation applies, MRCA, DRCA or the VEA, depends on when and where you served, and that shapes how the claim proceeds.

The evidence that helps

  • Imaging that confirms the degeneration, such as X-ray, CT or MRI of the neck
  • A clear diagnosis from your GP or specialist
  • Service history showing the physical demands of your roles
  • Any records of neck injuries or treatment during service
  • A history of your symptoms and how they affect daily life

Getting the diagnosis recorded correctly is the foundation of the claim. Our guide on getting the right DVA diagnosis covers how to approach that.

Impairment, treatment and compensation

If liability is accepted, treatment for your neck is funded through your DVA card, and the condition feeds into your impairment assessment. Neck conditions can affect movement, headaches and arm function, so they often carry real weight, but how many impairment points apply depends on the individual examination against the guide to determining impairment. Because cervical problems can contribute to headaches and nerve symptoms over time, it is worth assessing the full picture rather than the neck in isolation.
