DVA and Lumbar Spondylosis: Claims and Compensation

Published

Article at a glance

  • A wear-and-tear condition: degeneration of the lower spine that builds up over years.
  • Strongly service-linked: load carriage, marching, lifting and vibration are recognised contributors.
  • It has its own Statement of Principles: DVA assesses it against set factors and your evidence.
  • Imaging is key: scans confirming the degeneration carry a claim a long way.

Lumbar spondylosis is one of the most common back conditions Australian veterans claim, and for good reason. Years of load carriage, marching and heavy physical work take a toll on the lower spine that often does not surface until well after service.

This guide explains what lumbar spondylosis is, why it affects veterans, and how DVA approaches a claim. For the wider picture, see our DVA medical conditions hub and our explainer on the DVA impairment points table.

What is lumbar spondylosis?

Lumbar spondylosis is age-related, wear-and-tear degeneration of the lower (lumbar) spine. Over time the discs lose height, the facet joints wear, and small bony growths called osteophytes can form. The result is often lower back pain and stiffness, and where the changes press on nearby nerves, pain, numbness or weakness that radiates into the buttock or leg. It tends to develop gradually, which is why many veterans do not connect it to service until years later.

Why it affects veterans

Military service is hard on the lower back. The recognised contributors read like a description of everyday service life:

  • Carrying heavy packs and webbing over long distances
  • Repetitive lifting, bending and manual handling
  • Marching and running on hard surfaces
  • Whole-body vibration from vehicles and aircraft
  • Falls, jumps and acute back injuries during training or operations

It is the cumulative effect that matters. You do not need a single dramatic injury for service to have contributed, although a documented back injury during service certainly strengthens a claim.

Can you claim lumbar spondylosis through DVA?

Yes. Lumbar spondylosis is a well-recognised condition with its own Statement of Principles, the document DVA uses to decide whether a condition can be connected to service. Liability is assessed by looking at whether your service involved the kinds of factors set out in that Statement, and whether the medical evidence supports the diagnosis. A claim can be accepted where service caused the condition, or where service materially aggravated a condition you already had. Which legislation applies, MRCA, DRCA or the VEA, depends on when and where you served, and that affects how the claim is handled.

The evidence that helps

  • Imaging that confirms the degeneration, such as X-ray, CT or MRI
  • A clear diagnosis from your GP or specialist
  • Service history showing the physical demands of your roles
  • Any records of back injuries or treatment during service
  • A history of your symptoms and how they affect daily life

Getting the diagnosis recorded correctly is the foundation of everything that follows. Our guide on getting the right DVA diagnosis covers how to approach that.

Impairment, treatment and compensation

If liability is accepted, treatment for your back is funded through your DVA card, and the condition is factored into your impairment assessment. Lower back conditions can affect movement, lifting and daily function, so they often carry meaningful weight in that assessment, but how many impairment points apply depends on the individual examination against the guide to determining impairment. Because back conditions can also contribute to other problems over time, it is worth reviewing the full picture rather than treating it in isolation.
