TPD claims for paramedics depend on the insurance held and whether the evidence meets the applicable policy requirements. Leaving ambulance duties because of illness or injury does not, by itself, establish eligibility.
Depending on your cover, the assessment may consider whether you are unlikely ever to work again in an occupation reasonably suited to your education, training or experience. Other definitions may apply.
KSC Law can help identify your TPD cover, explain the relevant requirements and prepare supporting evidence.
Describe the work accurately
When preparing your claim, describe the duties you actually performed. These might include patient handling, driving, emergency decision-making or working in unpredictable environments. Explain which tasks your health affects and how.
If you moved to different duties, reduced your hours or attempted another role, include what changed and the outcome. The aim is to explain your work history and limitations clearly, rather than relying on your job title alone.
Medical evidence and the longer-term outlook
Ask your treating practitioners to explain your condition, treatment, prognosis and the limitations relevant to the policy definition.
For physical conditions, useful detail might concern lifting, movement or sustained activity. For psychological conditions, consider whether the reports explain difficulties with concentration, reliability or functioning in particular settings.
A diagnosis, operational restriction or period of leave should not be treated as proof that every requirement is met. The medical and employment evidence needs to address the applicable insurance definition.
Keep other claims separate
Include relevant workers compensation records and medical retirement correspondence when preparing your claim. Use them to explain the history, while checking what further evidence is needed to address the insurance policy.
Check your insurance history rather than relying only on your current super statement. Cover that has since ended may still warrant investigation in relation to an earlier period, subject to the applicable policy requirements and time limits.
Preparing for a consultation
Gather your statements, policy information, work history and any reports or decisions already available. Note when your duties changed and why work ended or reduced. You do not need to obtain new medical reports before speaking with us about which evidence may be required.
