How much is a TPD payout?

Published

There is no standard TPD payout. The starting point is the insured amount under the policy that applies to your claim, rather than an average figure or an amount attached to a particular diagnosis.

Two people with similar conditions may have different levels of cover and receive different amounts, even where both claims are accepted. The policy terms and level of insurance determine the benefit available.

Check the amount at the relevant time

Your latest statement may not show the cover that applied to an earlier claim. Ask your fund or insurer to confirm your insurance history, the applicable policy and the date used to determine the benefit.

Cover can reduce as you get older, and the amount previously held may remain relevant even if that cover has since ended. Check the applicable records rather than relying on today’s insured amount.

When reviewing your statements, distinguish your TPD insurance amount from your superannuation account balance. They represent different things: insurance provides cover under a policy, while your super balance includes accumulated retirement savings.

What if I have more than one policy?

Each policy needs its own assessment. Multiple claims may be possible where you hold more than one eligible policy, but several accounts do not guarantee several benefits. Some policies contain provisions affecting payment where another TPD benefit has already been received or is payable.

Where TPD insurance is linked with life cover, a successful claim may reduce the remaining life insurance benefit. Check the policy before assuming that your other cover will remain unchanged.

The insured amount and the amount you receive

The insured benefit is not necessarily the amount you will ultimately receive in your bank account. For cover held through super, access rules and any tax on withdrawal also need to be considered.

Tax may apply when a TPD benefit is withdrawn from super. Your age and circumstances can affect the treatment, so do not assume the entire amount will be tax free or that the same tax rate applies to everyone.

Before relying on a net figure, ask for an explanation of the fund’s payment and tax information. Review your written costs agreement for any legal fees and expenses, and obtain appropriate financial or tax advice before deciding how to access the money.

Can someone estimate my payout?

A useful estimate starts with confirming your cover and the applicable policy terms. It should distinguish the potential insurance benefit from your existing super savings and identify any assumptions about tax and costs.

Knowing the insured amount does not establish that the claim will succeed. Eligibility still depends on meeting the policy’s disability definition and other requirements.
