Understanding your CSC pension after an invalidity decision

Published

A CSC pension for veterans is not a single payment with one set of rules. If you receive an invalidity pension, your scheme and classification determine how your benefit is calculated and which review rules apply.

Understanding the decision helps you plan without relying on an estimate or another veteran’s experience.

What the classification tells you

A Class A pension and a Class B pension reflect different levels of assessed incapacity for relevant civilian employment. Class A means 60% or more; Class B means at least 30% but less than 60%. Class C means less than 30% and does not provide an invalidity pension. Other superannuation benefits may still be available under your scheme.

These percentages describe assessed incapacity, not the percentage of salary you will receive. The assessment considers civilian employment suited to your skills, qualifications and experience, and how your retiring impairments affect your capacity for that work. It is separate from a DVA impairment assessment.

Why the payment amount can differ

MilitarySuper, DFRDB and ADF Cover have different benefit rules. The calculation depends on your scheme, classification and relevant membership details. Your superannuation account balance alone does not establish the amount of an invalidity pension.

Ask for an explanation if the calculation uses dates, salary information or service details you do not recognise. Keep the decision and calculation together so they can be checked against your records.

Can the pension be reviewed?

CSC can review Class A and Class B invalidity classifications under the applicable scheme rules. MilitarySuper and ADF Cover invalidity classifications can be reviewed up to age 65. DFRDB invalidity classification reviews have no age limit. A review may leave your classification unchanged or change it, which can also change your benefit.

A review considers matters such as new skills, qualifications and experience, relevant civilian employment opportunities, and the effect of your retiring impairments and causally connected conditions. If CSC requests information, check the stated timeframe and contact CSC if you have difficulty responding.

Work and other payments

Your capacity for relevant civilian employment is central to the assessment. Changes in your skills, qualifications, experience and employment opportunities may be relevant to a review. Before returning to work or changing your work arrangements, check how your scheme’s rules apply to your circumstances.

Receiving a military invalidity pension can also affect other payments, including certain DVA payments. Before making decisions about a pension, lump sum or other benefit, obtain advice about the specific payments involved.
