DVA and Alcohol Dependence Claims

Published

Article at a glance

  • Often secondary: it frequently develops alongside PTSD, depression or anxiety.
  • Treatment without acceptance: care can be funded before a claim is decided.
  • A recognised condition: alcohol dependence can be claimed in its own right.
  • Support is confidential: reaching out does not put your career or claim at risk.

For many veterans, alcohol becomes a way of coping with something deeper, PTSD, depression, anxiety or the weight of chronic pain. Alcohol dependence is a recognised condition, and reaching out for help is a strength, not a failure. DVA supports both treatment and claims.

This guide explains how DVA approaches an alcohol dependence claim, the treatment you can access, and where to find support. For the wider picture, see our DVA medical conditions hub.

Alcohol dependence and military service

Alcohol dependence is a pattern of drinking that becomes difficult to control and continues despite the harm it causes. For veterans it rarely stands alone. It often begins as a way to manage the symptoms of a mental health condition or to dull persistent pain, and over time becomes a condition in its own right. Understanding that connection is important, because it shapes how a claim is approached.

The secondary pathway worth knowing

Where alcohol dependence develops as a consequence of an accepted condition, such as PTSD, depression or chronic pain, it can be claimed as a secondary condition to it. This is a common pathway for veterans, and one many do not realise is open to them. If you already have a mental health or physical condition accepted, it is worth reviewing whether alcohol use should be part of the picture. Our guides to PTSD and depression cover the conditions it most often follows.

Treatment you can access now

Through DVA’s Non-Liability Health Care, anyone with at least one day of ADF service can have treatment for alcohol use disorder funded by DVA without first proving it is service-related. That means you can get help straight away, while any claim is still being worked through. Taking that first step costs you nothing and does not depend on a claim being accepted.

Can you claim alcohol dependence through DVA?

Yes. Alcohol dependence can be claimed for compensation, assessed against the relevant Statement of Principles. A claim can be accepted where it connects to your service, or, very commonly, where it arises secondary to an accepted mental health or physical condition. The applicable legislation, MRCA, DRCA or the VEA, depends on when and where you served. Because the underlying conditions are so often linked, they are best looked at together.

The evidence that helps

  • A diagnosis from a GP, psychologist or psychiatrist
  • Your treatment history, including counselling, programs or medication
  • The connection to your service, or to an accepted condition
  • A picture of how it affects your daily life, work and relationships

A clear diagnosis is the foundation. Our guide on getting the right DVA diagnosis covers how to approach it.
