DVA and Adjustment Disorder: Claims, Treatment and Support

Published

Article at a glance

  • A stress-response condition: difficulty adapting to a major change or stressor.
  • Common at transition: discharge and return from deployment are frequent triggers.
  • Treatment without acceptance: mental health care can be funded before a claim is decided.
  • Diagnosis can evolve: getting it right early matters, as symptoms sometimes develop further.

Adjustment disorder often surfaces at the hardest transitions of military life, returning from deployment, or leaving service for the civilian world. It is a recognised mental health condition, and like other mental health conditions, it is both treatable and supported by DVA.

This guide explains how DVA approaches an adjustment disorder claim, the treatment you can access, and where to find support. For the wider picture, see our DVA medical conditions hub.

What is adjustment disorder?

Adjustment disorder is a stress-related condition where someone struggles to cope with a significant change or stressful event, and the emotional and behavioural response is stronger or longer-lasting than would normally be expected. It can bring low mood, worry, difficulty concentrating, withdrawal and trouble managing daily responsibilities. For veterans, the triggers are often built into service life: the upheaval of returning from operations, or the loss of structure, identity and purpose that can come with leaving the military.

Why it matters to get the diagnosis right

Adjustment disorder shares ground with depression, anxiety and PTSD, and in some people the symptoms develop over time into one of those conditions. Because each is assessed differently, an accurate, well-documented diagnosis from the outset matters, both for your treatment and for any claim. If your symptoms point beyond a reaction to a single stressor, it is worth reviewing whether another diagnosis fits better. Our guides to anxiety, depression and PTSD cover the related conditions.

Treatment you can access now

Through DVA’s Non-Liability Health Care, anyone with at least one day of ADF service can have treatment for any mental health condition, including adjustment disorder, funded by DVA without first proving it is service-related. Early support can make a real difference, and you do not need to wait for a claim to be decided.

Can you claim adjustment disorder through DVA?

Yes. Adjustment disorder can be claimed for compensation where it connects to your service. It is assessed against the relevant Statement of Principles, and a claim can be accepted where service caused it or materially aggravated it. The applicable legislation, MRCA, DRCA or the VEA, depends on when and where you served.

The evidence that helps

  • A diagnosis from a GP, psychologist or psychiatrist
  • Your treatment history, including counselling or medication
  • The connection between the stressor and your service
  • A picture of how symptoms affect your daily life and work

A clear diagnosis is the foundation. Our guide on getting the right DVA diagnosis covers how to approach it.
