DVA and Anxiety: Claims, Treatment and Support

Published

Article at a glance

  • Common and treatable: anxiety disorders are widely recognised among veterans.
  • Treatment without acceptance: mental health care can be funded even before a claim is decided.
  • It can be claimed: where it connects to service, or sits alongside PTSD or depression.
  • A diagnosis is the starting point: from a GP, psychologist or psychiatrist.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions among Australian veterans, and one of the most treatable. The demands of service, deployment and the transition to civilian life can all contribute, and you do not have to manage it alone.

This guide explains how DVA approaches an anxiety claim, the treatment available, and where to find support. For the wider picture, see our DVA medical conditions hub.

Anxiety and military service

Anxiety disorders cover more than everyday worry. They include generalised anxiety, panic disorder and social anxiety, and they can bring physical symptoms such as a racing heart, broken sleep, irritability and difficulty concentrating. For veterans, the contributing factors often trace back to service: sustained high-pressure environments, operational deployment, exposure to traumatic events, and the adjustment to civilian life afterwards. Anxiety also frequently sits alongside other conditions, particularly PTSD and depression.

Treatment you can access now

Through DVA’s Non-Liability Health Care, anyone with at least one day of ADF service can have treatment for any mental health condition, including anxiety, funded by DVA, without first having to prove the condition is service-related. That means you can start getting help while a compensation claim is still being worked through. It is one of the most useful and least understood supports available to veterans.

Can you claim anxiety through DVA?

Yes. Beyond funded treatment, an anxiety disorder can be claimed for compensation where it is connected to your service. It is assessed against the relevant Statement of Principles, and a claim can be accepted where service caused the condition, materially aggravated it, or where it arises alongside another accepted condition such as PTSD. The applicable legislation, MRCA, DRCA or the VEA, depends on when and where you served. Because mental health conditions often overlap, it is worth looking at the full picture rather than each condition in isolation.

The evidence that helps

  • A diagnosis from a GP, psychologist or psychiatrist
  • Your treatment history, including counselling or medication
  • The connection to your service or to an accepted condition
  • A picture of how symptoms affect your daily life and work

A clear diagnosis is the foundation. Our guide on getting the right DVA diagnosis covers how to approach that, and our overview of ADF PTSD compensation is worth reading if anxiety sits alongside trauma.

How anxiety is assessed for compensation

Once a mental health condition is accepted, its impact is assessed for permanent impairment using the recognised psychiatric rating approach, which looks at how the condition affects areas such as self-care, relationships, work and social function. How much it contributes depends on that individual assessment, so it is best confirmed case by case rather than estimated in advance.
